Deportivo Alavés vs Osasuna — Over 2.5 @ 2.48 a 1u (+1.48u).
FC Tokyo vs Kyoto Sanga FC — DC X2 @ 2.25 a 1.5u (-1.50u).

A correction week after August's strong bounce-back. 49 picks settled, 23 wins, 26 losses, zero voids, -5.53u and a ROI of -12.0%. The week was not a uniform disaster — Tuesday opened with a winner, Wednesday closed in the green (+0.97u), and BTTS Yes finished profitable on the week (+2.36u, 13W from 22 attempts). The damage had a specific source: Thursday delivered 0W from 3 picks (-3.00u) and the weekend saw Serie B and Brasileirão combine for 2W-7L between them. Strip those two clusters out and the week finishes near flat. The lesson, as always: weekly variance does not define the system's edge — the long-run sample does.
Weekly Summary
The week split cleanly into three phases. Tuesday and Wednesday gave us momentum — J1 League fired well in the midweek fixture batch (5W-3L) and the Championship and Scottish Prem added wins. Thursday was the turning point: three picks, three losses, across Ekstraklasa, Swiss Super League, and Ligue 1. The weekend brought volume (26 picks) but the Serie B and Brasileirão clusters both underperformed, offsetting strong individual wins from La Liga, Primeira Liga, and Eredivisie.
Best Pick of the Week
Deportivo Alavés vs Osasuna — Over 2.5 @ 2.48 at 1u (+1.48u). The most profitable pick of the week and arguably the most straightforward in hindsight. Both Alavés and Osasuna showed growing offensive momentum in the opening La Liga matchdays. The model assigned approximately 64% probability to Over 2.5, versus the 40.3% implied by the market price — a spread of nearly 24 percentage points on a La Liga fixture is unusual and fully warranted the standard 1u stake. The match delivered enough goals to make the price pay comfortably: +1.48u on a single unit.
La Liga, early season: still real market inefficiencies. Four La Liga picks this week: two wins (Alavés-Osasuna and Espanyol-Sevilla BTTS) and two losses (Athletic-Atlético and the Espanyol-Sevilla Over). Net positive in the world's most-watched league, and exactly the kind of consistent presence the model needs to sustain during the period when market odds haven't fully tightened.
Worst Pick and the Lesson
FC Tokyo vs Kyoto Sanga FC — DC X2 @ 2.25 at 1.5u (-1.50u). The highest-impact loss of the week and the most instructive one. The model generated a nominal edge of 31.7% — a number that looks irresistible on the surface — but that figure concealed a critical warning: extreme sub-model disagreement. The RF and XGB components assigned 40-43% probability to a home win, while the Poisson component gave Kyoto 78-79% win probability, driven by dominant H2H history (three consecutive heavy Kyoto wins, 10-0 aggregate). Poisson over-fitted the historical pattern while the ML ensemble was detecting FC Tokyo's current home-ground strength.
The lesson is not to ignore H2H. It is that when sub-models diverge this radically, the raw edge figure loses its meaning. A 31.7% edge calculated on a probability that two of six models actively reject is not equivalent to a 12% edge where the ensemble converges. High-conviction J1 picks at 1.5u stake should require consensus, not just nominal edge.
Week Over Week
Two consecutive weeks pulling in opposite directions:
- Aug 24-30: 32 picks · 20W-12L-0V · +4.05u · ROI +13.6%
- Sep 1-6: 49 picks · 23W-26L-0V · -5.53u · ROI -12.0%
Nearly ten units of swing in fourteen days. The structural difference sits in two places: first, Thursday (-3.00u from 3 picks) had no equivalent in the prior week; second, Serie B and Brasileirão exposure was roughly double the August level in terms of pick count, with results going the wrong way. BTTS Yes remained the sturdiest market (+2.36u this week) — if the sample holds, it would make four consecutive positive months for that market.
All-time the project now stands at 831 picks, a 54.9% strike rate and +4.82% ROI overall, +42.43u total profit. A -12% ROI week does not undo that record, but it is a prompt to review exposure thresholds in leagues where confirmed statistical advantage is thinner.
What We're Watching This Week
Three specific areas. The major European leagues return from the international break (La Liga Matchday 4, Premier League GW4, Bundesliga MD4, Serie A MD4) — seasonal statistics are now robust enough for the model to work from cleaner signals, and market prices have not yet closed their early-season margins fully. Historically, this is the period of the year where the model surfaces the most picks with genuine edge.
Serie B is under threshold review. This week was 1W-4L in that market (-2.95u). Five picks is not a conclusive sample, but it is sufficient to raise the minimum edge required before publishing BTTS in Serie B until we have more 2026-27 data. Brasileirão receives the same review: 1W-3L this week. The model has a positive track record in Brazil over prior months, but the start of the European season distorts global exposure and the individual results this week did not support confidence at current thresholds.
The standing rule holds: we do not change the system on a bad week any more than we change it on a good one. We review parameters when the sample justifies it — not when the P&L stings.
